During the construction process, an additive is added to the cement mixture. This is known as the concrete additive. The additive adds up more strength and durability to the mixture. Nowadays it is very common to see skyscrapers. Concrete additives are added during the construction of these buildings as it can withstand the pressure exerted by them.

We can find different concrete additives in the market. But the best of all is silica based concrete additives. When silicon metal or the alloy of silica is being heated in an electric furnace, the byproducts of silicon are formed and this is known as silica fumes or micro-silica.

The texture of silica-based concrete additives

When silicon metal is heated it gives fumes, which is mainly composed of micro-silica and is non-crystalline in nature. It is mainly in the form of powder. These particles measure about 150 Nanometers in diameter and are spherical in shape. It provides with durability in two variant ways.

Silica fumes are often available in the form of material. This form helps to maintain equal volume throughout the product with equal distribution.

When silica fumes are available in the form of filler, then the size of the silica fumes are reduced. The effectiveness of silica depends mainly on its composition.

Application of silica-based concrete additives

The use of silica fumes in concrete additives is always beneficial. The properties of cement rise when the additive is added to it. The properties are as follows: -

1. Resists abrasion- the silica-based additives have high resisting capability against abrasion.
2. Resists corrosion – the decreased permeability in silica fumes helps it to form a protective layer against the chloride ions which affects the steel bars.

The silica fumes can be of great use if collected. It has an adverse effect as well as it pollutes the air if not collected.
